3 Lawn Care Tips for New Homeowners

Welcome to your new home! As a new homeowner, there is so much on your to-do list, so it’s easy to overlook some things. But Nature’s Select Sandhills reminds you that the outside of your home is just as important as the inside. So, we’re dishing out our top three lawn care tips for new homeowners.

1. Prepare Your Lawn for the Winter Months

Preparing your lawn for the winter months is an essential part of maintaining a healthy and attractive outdoor space. The first step in doing so is to mow the grass at least one final time before the weather begins to get cold. This will help ensure that it remains short, even when it isn’t actively growing. Additionally, you’ll want to feed your lawn with the right stuff to balance the pH in the soil. Doing so allows your grass to feed and nurture itself during the colder months and prepares it for spring growth. Remember, a well-cared-for lawn is a healthy, robust lawn.

2. Mow Your Lawn at the Right Height

Mowing your lawn at the right height is essential for keeping it healthy and vibrant. When grass is mowed too short, it can lead to a wide range of problems, including weak roots and weed invasion. On the other hand, if you let your grass grow too tall, it can become filled with moisture, become home to pests, and be the ideal place for winter mold. So, before the weather drastically turns, cut your grass to the right height one last time.

3. Seed & Aerate Your Lawn

Seeding and aerating your lawn is an excellent way to keep it healthy and vibrant. By seeding, you are introducing new grass types that may be better suited for your climate and soil type. By aerating, you are allowing the roots of your existing grass to breathe and access more oxygen, nutrients, and water. Aeration is ideal for spring and summer while seeding and growing new grass is best done in the fall. So, even if you’ve purchased a house right before winter, you’ll want to wait until the following spring to do any of these chores.
