3 Post-Aeration and Seeding Steps

Aeration and seeding are two of the most important steps you can take in the spring or fall to ensure a lush, green lawn. By aerating your yard, you introduce more oxygen and essential nutrients into the soil. Seeding your lawn will promote new grass and help improve your yard’s look and feel. However, your maintenance doesn’t stop once the Nature’s Select Sandhills team leaves. In fact, there are some critical steps to take, to ensure your lawn thrives post-aeration and seeding.

3 Post-Aeration and Seeding Steps

1. Stay Off the Grass

Limiting foot traffic following aeration and seeding will ensure that seeds have time to germinate. Staying off your lawn for some time will also ensure that you don’t re-compact the soil. It’s best to limit traffic for a month or so, if possible. By allowing the grass seed time to sprout a root system and giving your lawn ample time to breathe, the aeration and seeding efforts will greatly impact your yard’s overall health and look. So, if you need to, plan to have your lawn aerated before the height of all your outdoor spring and summer activities or near the end of fall when the kids go back to school.

2. Water Immediately & Regularly

Watering your lawn right after aeration and seeding is the best thing you can do for your lawn. You’ll not only give the new seeds what they need to take hold in the soil, but you’ll also be supplying the current grass with essential water needed to grow healthy and green. You should also plan to water regularly until the new grass is about 1-2 inches in height. We recommend watering twice daily until you see little puddles in your lawn.

3. Leave the Clumps

After aeration, small clumps of dirt will be scattered all over your lawn. We recommend that you leave them right where they are since these clumps of dirt hold valuable minerals and nutrients for new seeds, even helping to carry the new seeds into the soil as they dissolve back into the ground. While it can be tempting to remove the clumps, doing so could make it even more challenging for the new seeds to take hold without this extra help.
