3 Helpful Lawn Insects

Does the sight of any bug in your lawn send you running in the opposite direction? If you nodded your head in agreement, then you’re not alone. Many people go scrambling for the bug killer when they spot an insect, but that shouldn’t always be the case. While not all lawn insects are beneficial, there are several that you should want to keep around. Here are some that we encourage homeowners to keep. However, if you find anything else, then give Nature’s Select Piedmont a call!

3 Helpful Lawn Insects

1. Ladybugs

Also known as ladybirds or lady beetles, ladybugs are one insect you want to keep in your lawn. These little beetles help keep aphids in check and manageable. Aphids can cause black, sticky spots in your lawn and they can cause the grass to turn yellow, so having ladybugs around is the best choice you can make for your lawn. Don’t be afraid to introduce ladybugs into your lawn if you don’t already have them.

2. Praying Mantis

The praying mantis has an unmatched appetite, making it a necessity in your lawn and garden. As a skilled hunter, the praying mantis is well-known for preying on moths, mosquitos, roaches, flies, and aphids. While they may not pop up until mid-fall, they are essential for your lawn, taking over the eating habits of the ladybugs to give you that pest-free lawn right up until the cold weather hits.

3. Ground Beetles

The ground beetle is a heaven-sent insect. Not only does this beetle devour the devastating lawn grub that can kill large portions of your grass, but they also eat cutworms and armyworms. Both of these worms are responsible for the dead or dying patches of grass that many homeowners fight off during the spring and summer months. They also like to hide under rocks and landscaping tiles, eating up all the decomposing matter around your home.
